Event Description:

The Massachusetts 55+ Housing Industry CouncilBRAGB's Multi-Family Council and BRAGB's Sales & Marketing Committee invite you to this short seminar and tour of one of South Boston's most intriguing multi-family building, Distillery North.

You are invited to our second tour of 2018; an exclusive behind-the-scenes presentation and tour of the unique features and amenities of DIstillery North, a 2017 Gold PRISM Award winner for Best Net Zero Energy / Passive Design.

The Distillery North is the first multifamily Passive House project in Massachusetts, conceived to establish a replicable standard for a high-quality, low-carbon development. The project sits at a transitional light industrial edge along a channel once part of South Boston?s historic working waterfront. It mediates the junction between a traditional low-rise, tight-knit residential neighborhood and the fast-developing mixed-use high-rise Seaport District. Occupying a city block, the site was once connected to the Boston Harbor through working canals that supported the now converted 19th century former rum distillery, which houses 150 artists and other businesses.

The Distillery North enhances this vibrant community with 28 new artist live/work units, ground floor commercial space, a cafe, and a roof deck with sweeping views of the city and harbor.

Discussion Topics:
  • Brief history of site since 1984 by property owner & environmentalist Fred Gordon.
  • Why the project was done.
  • Finding the right architect: the story of innovation & commitment to environmentalism as a solution. Balance between energy, air and expense.
  • Who is attracted to this building? Fact: Distillery North was fully occupied within 2 months.
  • What is the long term view of Passive Building Design for the Multi-Family sector?
  • Is this the future for Multi-Family housing?
